Traveling Gavel On the Move

On Monday night, May 15, 2017, five brothers from Alexandra Lodge #87 made the trip to Parrsboro to attend the regular meeting of Minas Lodge #67. It was a special evening as the lodge was putting on a Mock First Degree.

Below VW Bro. Mike Gaul , Secretary of Alexandra Lodge, presents the Traveling Gavel to VW Bro. Rick Harvey, Secretary of Minas Lodge. This was then followed by a short session of Masonic Education entitled, “Why Men Love Free Masonry” by VW Bro. Gaul.

The Mock First Degree was very well carried out. Bro. Darrell Spence played the part of the candidate and RW Bro. Robert York acted as the WM to conduct the degree with VW Bro. Harvey giving the Obligation.

Our Annual District Church Service

This year on Sunday, May 7th our Cumberland District held its Annual Masonic Church Service at the Saint Andrew’s-Wesley United Church in Springhill. We were graciously hosted by the VW Bro. Rev. Wayne McCarther. The service got underway at 11:15am with some 26 masons (from looking at the photos I believe this is the correct number) attending from the Cumberland District and two brothers from Grand Lodge, VW Bro. Gerald Settle the Grand Sword Bearer and VW Bro. Chris Lucas a Past Grand Sword Bearer.

RW Bro. Norman Rushton, DDGM, and W Bro. Justin Simons, WM of Laurie Lodge #70, gave the morning scripture readings, followed by an uplifting sermon entitled “The Power of Prayer” by the minister. As noted above our host, VW Bro. Rev. Wayne McCarther, is also a master mason – and I believe he said he has been a mason for over 50 years! He is a Past Master of Lebanon Lodge and has been a member of a number of lodges in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick as he moved around with his ministry jobs over the years. He was also Grand Chaplain for the Grand Lodge of New Brunswick a few years ago. We masons of Cumberland District are honoured to have him in our midst as he continues to serve his parishioners in Springhill and area.

Below we see L to R: W Bro. Justin Simons and RW Bro. Norman Rushton.

After the service the ladies of the church provided us with a magnificent luncheon in the church hall downstairs. The brothers and the regular church members then enjoyed a time of fellowship and refreshment before leaving for their homes. One of our brothers, W Bro. Justin Simons, happened to be celebrating his birthday and the gathering wished him all the best with an enthusiastic Happy Birthday song. Below we see him with Tena, his lovely wife and Lindy their daughter, their son, Aaron, was not able to make the service.
