2016 The District Deputy Grand Master’s Annual Meeting
The Annual Cumberland DDGM’s Meeting was held this past Dec. 17 in River Philip. Laurie Lodge #70 was the host for this year’s meeting. The meeting was well attend by the district brothers. There were 27 brothers at the meeting from seven of our eight district lodges including our visitors from Grand Lodge. Our DDGM, RW Bro. Norm Rushton, and all the brothers were very happy to have our Grand Master, MW Bro. George O’Leary and his GDC, RW Bro. Charles R. J. MacKinlay, with us for the afternoon.
The brothers met at the lodge building at 12 noon for a delicious buffet style (my favourite) diner served by members of the local Venturer Scouts group. The DDGM, who is the local leader of the Venturer Scouts, explained that Scouts Canada has two camps in our area that need new roofs. To help them the DDGM said that the collection that would be taken up during the meeting would be going to this endeavour. As well, during the district meeting, a motion was made and approved so that he could apply to the Masonic Foundation’s Special Projects Fund for getting money to help with the purchase of these roofs for the Scouts of the area.
The meeting got underway with the opening of Laurie Lodge #70 at 1pm. The DDGM was escorted into the lodge by his DGDC, RW Bro. Archie St. Peter. As this was his Annual Meeting he took over the gavel and master’s chair for the meeting.
Once seated there was an alarm at the older door and the GDC, RW Bro. Charles MacKinlay, was admitted. He then escorted the GM into the lodge.
During the afternoon’s meeting there were two very special presentations. The Grand Master presented RW Bro. Archie St. Peter with his Lodge Secretary’s Long-Service Medal. The other presentation, made by the Grand Master, was that of a 50 Year Jewel to our RW Bro. Fred Newman. With 50 years as a mason RW Bro. Newman has seen a lot and accomplished a lot in Freemasonry. He told the assembled brothers that over his masonic career he has been pleased to have raised 122 new masons to the brotherhood!
Our district is very pleased to have two such distinguished brothers in our membership. Examples made by such men as these two brothers, can only help further the growth and health of our fraternity.
The meeting ended with everyone coming away feeling that masonry was alive and well in our area.
A sincere thanks to all the brothers who came out for the meeting and especially to the DDGM and the people he had helping him organize the event.
